Duncan Jones, director of Moon and Source Code, came out on stage during the Legendary/Warner Bros. panel at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday with a special surprise. It was the first teaser trailer for the finally-in-production World of Warcraft movie planned for 2015! The MMO that virtually everyone has played at least for a short while is finally heading to the big-screen with filming said to begin in early 2014.
While Duncan Jones only appeared briefly, stating that he was excited to make a movie where, "you delve into fantasy," Blizzard said the following after the panel:
"We are excited about the Warcraft movie, which begins production in 2014, and we look forward to sharing more in the future."
As for the teaser, which was described as a "mood piece," the video is unlikely to ever escape the confines of Hall H where it was shown. That is, unless someone sneakily recorded the trailer and will be uploading it in the weeks ahead. At least there were a few thousand people watching and able to provide a description.
An armored, unshaven warrior crosses a barren and rocky landscape. He takes a pull of water or potion from skin, pulls a shield off of a skeleton (looting!) and bangs his sword against it. Only to have an orc rise up behind him, muscled and very green, and bring down his hammer onto the man's head. Of course, the trailer ends right before impact.
Expect to hear more information on the World of Warcraft movie later this year as the film builds its cast, decides on a script and finally starts making an actual movie. For now, all we have is a short teaser no one will actually ever get to see.
