Capcom managed to surprise quite a few people today when they announced Strider Hiryu's return. In 2014, the ninja assassin will be getting an entirely new game, Strider, for PC as well as current- and next-gen consoles.
The new Strider will be a side-scroller platformer that drops Strider in Kazakh City, a mix of "ornate Russian architecture and hard-edged futuristic high-rise buildings with sprawling energy cables and pipework." The point is, the city is big and futuristic.
Capcom assures that the new Strider game will stick to its roots. In addition the quick combat and free-flowing navigation -- inspired by modern action games -- players will also have a wide arsenal of moves and weapons to play with.
Here's the premise of the story:
The year is Meio: 048, on an alternate dystopian future of Earth. The whole planet suffers under the oppressive, iron-fisted rule of the mysterious and omnipotent Grand Master Meio. An expert in sabotage and assassination, Hiryu is the youngest ever recruit to attain a Special A-Class in the hellish Strider training program, and is the only man capable of achieving the mission to eliminate Grand Master Meio.
Not bad. Last time I saw Strider was in Capcom's Marvel vs. Capcom series.
Anyway, dig the announcement trailer below for a better idea of how the game will look and feel. Reveal screenshots (and a nice bit of concept art) are after the break.
