It probably won't surprise you to learn that The Last of Us for the PS3 was the best-selling videogame for June 2013, according to the NPD Group. Naughty Dog's title won serious accolades and was the biggest launch for a Sony platform title in the UK since Uncharted: Golden Abyss. It enjoys the second highest launch sales for a PS3 title on our shores, topped only by God of War 3's performance back in March 2010. The Last of Us currently represents the third highest launch during June by the NPD's reckoning since the market research firm began tracking software sales in 1995.
Runner-up is Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the 3DS, which according to Nintendo managed to sell a grand total of 505,000 physical and digital units combined last month alone; 20 percent of those digital sales were made though the eShop. The NPD's sales figures currently only count the physical retail sales, but being second only to The Last of Us means New Leaf still sold pretty darn well.
Meanwhile, Microsoft's decision to at last release Minecraft for the Xbox 360 at physical retail seriously paid off, as it was the third best-selling title for June despite already being available on Xbox Live for over two years. It even managed to outsell Black Ops II and Battlefield 3.
On the hardware sales front, the Xbox 360 once again falls behind Nintendo's 3DS with sales of 140,000 units. Nintendo reveals that their handheld achieved retail mastery last month thanks to hardware sales of nearly 225,000 units, a 40 percent year-on-year increase in sales.
A 3DS hat trick of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D and of course Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (the last two haven't yet fallen off NPD's software top ten by the way) has been attributed for the platform's strong showing last month. Wii U hardware sales on the other hand... well, Nintendo didn't really touch on those.
