Update: Nintendo has since decided to grant permission for the Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament to be livestreamed. Here's the official word from Shoryuken:
"I’ve just receive word from Nintendo that the Evo Smash Bros. Melee stream will be allowed to proceed. We will be restoring the original stream and tournament schedules. Obviously this is a huge relive for all of us here and we’re thrilled that the world will get to see the best Smash players fight it out this weekend. Thanks to everyone online who supported both Evo and Smash."
EVO Championship Series starts this Friday, the biggest fighting game tournament in North American and potentially the world. Nine games will have official tournaments, a handful more will have side-tournaments, and most of them will be livestreamed at one point or another across three concurrent broadcasts.
Unfortunately, those livestreams will not include any Super Smash Bros. Melee, as news broke today that Nintendo refused to give permission to tournament organizes to livestream the event. Despite being one of the central games at the event, despite fans donating over $230,000 to have the game officially represented at EVO, no Smash Bros. will be officially livestreamed the entire weekend -- not even the finals. Don't expect Super Smash Bros. Melee to be featured at the event again, or any other Nintendo game for that matter.
While not exactly breaking news or anything, this sort of decision just boggles my mind. It's an outstanding example of Nintendo's anti-fan and community attitude and representative of the larger issues that now threaten the company as it struggles to maintain profitability. Ah, who am I kidding, that's a huge exaggeration. Nevertheless it's a jerk move and a huge disappointment. Shame on you, Nintendo.
Tune into EVO starting this Friday at 8AM PST as the three-day event starts off with qualifiers for Super Street Fighter IV, Mortal Kombat and replacing Super Smash Bros. Melee, Persona 4 Arena. It's an outstanding weekend of talented fighting game pros battling it out. Check out the source for the new full schedule.
