In recent weeks Nintendo's fans have been hard at work gathering signatures for their anti-region locking petition for the Wii U and 3DS. After both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One announced their platforms would be region free, fans hoped Nintendo would follow suit. The petition currently stands at almost 14,000 supporters, prompting an official response from Nintendo -- a denial.
Here's the response provided to Barrel Roll Gaming from Nintendo of America:
"Nintendo has no plans to remove region locking from our systems. By taking this approach, Nintendo is able to include parental controls and ensure compliance with regional standards and rating systems."
Nevertheless, the signatures keep coming in and the response has only stirred the energy of the movements followers. A simple canned PR response will not sate the ambitions of the movement and they continue to move forward. Perhaps it's the effects of the recent #PS4NoDRM movement that's given them confidence, or perhaps it's just a true belief that consoles should be region free, but either way Nintendo's can't just ignore this until it goes away.
Sign the petition to stop region blocking on the 3DS and Wii U today, if you're interested. Or, of course, you can jump on the Wii U and draw a picture supporting a region-free Nintendo platform and release it to the Miiverse.
