Sony decided to announced its July line-up of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers today. Starting tomorrow PS+ subs in North America will have access to Battlefield 3, then later this month also Jet Set Radio and Oddworld: Munch's Odyssey HD. That's just for PS3 though. For those with Vita, Metal Slug XX and Dokuro will also be available. Did I mention the Summer Blast sale that starts tomorrow? There's that too.
Naturally, the first assumption would be that Sony's rushing this out today just to make Microsoft look bad. If you missed it, Microsoft released Defense Grid: The Awakening today as part of its "Games with Gold" program for Xbox Live subscribers. Some people are... underwhelmed. It would behoove Sony to rub that disappointment in a little. That's doubtful, however, as you don't just rush putting out a game like Battlefield 3 for free. This is just funny timing is all.
A 3-month subscription for PlayStation Plus costs $17.99 and a yearlong sub costs $49.99. I typically get 12 months of Xbox Live gold for sale around $30-35 and have yet to find a similar sale for PS+. I doubt too many people will buy into PlayStation 3 just for Battlefield 3, unless they're buying in early in anticipation of the PlayStation 4 launch. Really, I'd just recommend investing in your favorite console and sticking with it. Free games every now and then aren't that big of a deal.
