All Things D is reporting that several sources close to the matter say Microsoft's Xbox head Don Mattrick will be leaving the company for a leadership position at Zynga. This has to be a joke, right? According to the sources Mattrick and Zynga have been having discussions for some time now, so this isn't in reaction to Microsoft's difficulties with Xbox during E3. Considering the tension around the upcoming next-gen console releases, things may catch fire once more.
I can't wait for the all of the new internet memes.
Zynga has been going through a tumultuous period over the past year, with current CEO Mark Pincus said to be looking for a replacement. A replacement which might just be Don Mattrick. Mattrick himself is known for leading several turnarounds as CEO. While Pincus is a Zynga founder, all leaders tend to pass on power after their company grows beyond their experience.
Gosh, I can't even comprehend what's going on here. Mattrick, in recent weeks, has just been the symbol and heart of all the Xbox One nonsense that's enraged the gaming community. From his quote that the Xbox One price was justified because it delivered, "thousands of dollars in value," to the used-game DRM reversal itself. Now he's leaving for Zynga? One of the least respected companies in the industry? This guy! He's crazy!
Should this rumor prove true, and lets reitterate that this is 100% rumor until proven otherwise, but if it proves true the news could come as soon as this evening. What is even going on?
