Dear lord how deep does this rabbit hole go. Earlier this week Valve released a huge patch for Half Life 2 and the only thing internet sleuths could pull from it were characters from the Korean language. For about five minutes the internet flipped on its back thinking Valve had just put out a new ARG, but official word was it was just localization files for Korea, Thailand and Portugal. Everyone then cried themselves to sleep. Half Life 3 was not confirmed.
Today everything changed. It's time to flip out again. Surgeon Simulator 2013 received a fun update that added a TF2 level where the the Medic performs surgery on the Heavy. Apparently that's not all that was added to the game. Just found today, via NeoGAF, is a puzzle on the bottom of something. A puzzle... WITH KOREAN CHARACTERS ON IT. Queue the fireworks everyone, Half Life 3 confirmed.
Okay, maybe Half Life 3 confirmed is a bit of a stretch, but obviously something ridiculously weird is going on. We could be on the edge of an ARG with... consequences. Or maybe this is all fake and hype and... well damn it, if there's going to be a game I get to write nonsense articles about every now and then, it's Half Life 3. Deal with it! And also stay tuned for more updates as we travel down the rabbit hole.
Why do we do this to ourselves?
Update: Surgeon Simulator 2013 Twitter just teased us. They know something! Are they pulling off a huge troll?
So, we hear there's some puzzle you're trying to figure out...— SurgeonSimulator2013 (@SurgeonSim2013) June 27, 2013
Update 2: As AznLiquid noted the official Steam Twitter account posted this after the HL2 patch was originally released. The Korean translates to something along the lines of "Prepare for unforeseen consequences" -- a popular G-Man quote:
WARNING: The most recent HL2 update has some issues. We're working to fix this, you can pause the update for now. 예측하지 못한 결과에 대비하라...— Steam Support (@Steam_Support) June 25, 2013
Update 3: It appears that the Surgeon Simulator 2013 puzzle has nothing to do with a Valve ARG of any kind. It's a Surgeon Simulator 2013 exclusive ARG and the Korean text was "just a coincidence":
Whoa! It seems that you've got a little ahead of yourselves! Here's a clue: THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY VALVE GAMES! Carry on now...— SurgeonSimulator2013 (@SurgeonSim2013) June 28, 2013
