Today is the launch day for High Moon Studios' Deadpool game on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, but where there should be hype there's only trepidation. That's not going to stop Deadpool, however, whose launch trailer characterizes everything that's off about the game. The trailer is about a minute, minute and a half of Deadpool screeching, "Deadpool, bang, babes, mayhem," to a dubstep track. Apply face to palm.
Don't get me wrong, as a Deadpool fan myself I understand that yes, those four things are what Deadpool loves most. However, when you push all of them as the main features of a game over and over and over again, it really comes across like there's no depth to the experience. Forgive the expression, but they've really cut Deadpool out to be 2D walking punch line. Maybe great for a $4 comic that you can read in 15 minutes, but a $60 multi-hour game?
My favorite thing about Deadpool is he could be walking through a park and somehow make is insane, hilarious, or even an oddly poignant emotional moment. The dude's got personality, the dude's got a diverse and storied background, the dude's more than just a neon sign that says "Deadpool" though he is that too.
When it's all said and done Deadpool's launch trailer is still the best look we've gotten at the game yet. If this was how we were introduced to the Deadpool game then we might have gotten off on the right foot. Now? When I have the option of walking out and buying the game? Well, we'll each have to watch the launch trailer and make that decision for ourselves, won't we?
