A bit of conversation is going around online right now regarding Microsoft's plans for the Build Developer Conference later this week. Basically, we know Microsoft has something to say regarding Xbox One app plans and potentially indie publishing as well. We also know there's an NDA in effect, so mouth pieces like Notch can't tell us what's up. Is Microsoft about to reveal open indie publishing on the Xbox One?
Considering how little we know at this point I'm afraid that statement will have to remain a question and not an answer. There's simply too little information going around to draw any concrete conclusions. Should Microsoft add the ability for indies to self-publish? Absolutely. Do developers want the ability to self-publish? That's a resounding yes. Will it happen? Tough to say.
What we can assume, however, is that Microsoft will never have a better opportunity than right now to make this decision. People are still applauding their decision to revert back to disc-based ownership for the Xbox One. Now there's positive buzz going around about introducing indie self-publishing. The Build Developer Conference only happens once. Take advantage while you can, Microsoft.
The Build Developer Conference begins June 26 and runs through the 28. If there's news to be had, expect it to come early on the 26.
