I think I'll give Microsoft as much praise for not doing the wrong thing as I gave Sony: None. Congratulations. You didn't go all-in against the consumer. Not being evil isn't worthy of applause.

I still find this GIF very apt.

Cause, I mean, come on. Even if inaccurate now for the used games, it will probably end up that way this gen.

So Microsoft essentially tarnished the unparalleled media coverage and attention of E3 for no reason. If they actually listened to consumer sentiment from the start instead of relying on preorder figures and profits they might be in a position to compete with Sony. As it stands they can go to all the PAX's and trade show expos they want with this new policy, they won't be able to recover the full extent of sales/preorders they've lost.

To be honest I'm mainly a PC gamer but would have considered a One some time down the road, with the lack of transparency and respect for customers MS's IEB has shown, I'd rather just upgrade my video card for a second time.

Second chance for a desperate attempt to win 'hearts and minds of gamers'? Well, might work for some!

What's with the thing with the initial internet set up? Mandatory for all?

But it's TOO LATE for me, I've decided to buy PlayStation 4.

They already lost me as a customer based on the attitude and responses from their staff (Mattrick, Major Nelson). I think the damage has been done, and that they've lost a lot of core gamers who are now in the Sony camp.
My thoughts exactly. Just the fact that they had the balls to even try anything of the sort let alone basically tell everyone involved with the military to "deal with it" says a great deal about their values as a company.

Actually, just the way they handled the military side of things is going to be a huge shot in the foot. People don't take such disregard for something so many take such great pride in lightly.

Hearing this, my first thought was that the Xbox One is contender for me again. But the one thing MS succeeded in doing with their E3 announce was to turn a long time Xbox owner from assuming he'd get an Xbox One to thinking his only option last week was a PS4. Basically, getting a Playstation hasn't crossed my mind in 8yrs, and now its at the forefront of my plans for the next gen upgrade. I still like the Xbox platform, I'm just a lot more interested in watching closely both platforms now.

Last weekend a few friends of mine who are casual gamers asked about the Xbox One vs PS4. I told them about the DRM and the conversation very quickly turned to whether they ought to pre-order the PS4 (they often bring sports titles to each other's places to play multiplayer). For that type of demographic, online play isn't even important, cost isn't even the biggest factor, the biggest factor is convenience and perception of convenience. Not being able to lend a game to a friend without some complicated scheme is an instant turnoff for them.

Despite this change, there are still some downsides:

-A smaller game selection due to indies not being able to self-publish.
-Mandatory Kinect, which ups the price of the console.
-No more family sharing plan.
-Free apps like Netflix are still paywalled.

Still not worth it over PS4.
The Xbox One may have its downsides, but this is still just opinion. I'll be getting both systems, as I think they're both fantastic pieces of hardware, but the Xbox One's game selection so far appeals to me quite a bit more. With Killer Instinct, Dead Rising, and Halo being a few of my all time favorite game series', the Xbox One is a must own for me. If you ask me, the value of a console really boils down to the games it plays, and to me, the Xbox One has an advantage in that respect.

That's not to say a PS4 exclusive won't come and blow these games out of the water, I'm strictly talking launch.

Well that's good to hear. I think I'm still going to get a PS4 though. I don't really have any interest in mandatory kinetic, the higher price and a few other small things.

People over on reddit's xb1 subreddit are going apeshit over this, a lot of very angry people because they've nuked the family share option with this DRM reversal. So now they've just gone and pissed off the demographic of people who were planning on day 1 purchases. Some of them have now changed their mind because of this.

Sure, you can't please everyone but wow...totally not good for Microsoft right now. This decision btw is not like flipping a switch. They mentioned that the console was built around this DRM scheme, and now they have to undo it. The console launches this year and they have to do that? I hope they can do it because they really don't need any more negative press.

edit: Just saw a couple people from two different gamestops in diff cities say that the preorders were at about 80% PS4 20% XB1 for both their own 'zones'. That's probably the most likely reason why MS reversed their decision on the DRM.

Well I guess we could see this coming, all over the web people were concerned about this and with all the E3 PS4 vs Xbox One discussions talking about this it's a good thing that they are changing this.
