XCOM: Enemy Unknown coming to iOS is likely to be a contentious process. The completely rebuilt port has had its release date announced, June 20, as well as its $20 price point. That's $20 whether you're picking it up for iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. While it'd be silly to argue that the quality of Firaxis' product doesn't justify the price, a $20 mobile title is at this point in time a rare and awkward animal.
$20 for a AAA game is amazing. $20 for a AAA game on a table device with high quality graphics is great. $20 for any game, AAA or not, on a phone is, without further evidence, hard to swallow. There's no doubt that there's a vast difference in gameplay experiences between a tablet device and a phone, but that's probably irrelevant. It's likely Firaxis has to choose one price for the game across all iOS devices and iPhone users will just have to take the hit.
Here's a short description of the port, in case anyone was curious as to its design:
"XCOM: Enemy Unknown for iOS takes the complete XCOM experience of the console and PC version of the game and optimizes it for the touch interface of iOS devices. XCOM: Enemy Unknown for iOS is a universal app that includes GameCenter support and utilizes iCloud functionality so players can save games across their iOS devices."
Basically, I included the above to make it clear that the iOS port is absolutely the core experience of Enemy Unknown on PC and all content therein, barring the multiplayer mode which will be added later as a free update. The issue isn't the quality of the port (though it could be, I haven't reviewed the port after all), which is a refreshing part of the equation to take out.
Should a $20 tablet game cost $20 on phone as well? The content is the same, but the way a player views the game and interacts with it is entirely different. I'd say the whole experience is dramatically different. I guess in the end whether the cost is justified is up to the purchaser. If you'd like some advice though, I'd say don't dive into this sale unless you've got an iPad. Otherwise, watch out for a Steam sale or something.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be available on iPad, iPhone and iTouch starting June 20 for $20. Supported devices include the iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, iPad mini, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5th Generation.
