What sucks about this is it translates to $549 Australian, with a $50-$100 camera. The Xbox One is going to be $599 aud. As far as consumers or the industry can tell, this higher markup is simply 'because they can'. =/

Well, as the PS4 is going to be region-free, Australians can simply order from Amazon at the American $399 price point with a $15 shipping charge.

It's crazy isn't it. But PS4 still works out cheaper than the Xbox, so that's what matters right?

Until you guys live literally an hour from things that are essentially half price for everything, as the majority of Canadians have to do with the Americans south of us, you don't get to complain too hard (I amend this for our Australian cousins who have to deal with waaaaay high mark ups on a lot of things). Still, that is pretty crappy to have to deal with for both consoles, especially the larger mark up for the PS4. I'm not kidding, it's become a major thing over the last few years for Canadians to buy stuff down in the States because it is that much cheaper, even after the VAT taxes and so forth that they put on some things at the border.

Yeah, we can drive to the nearest American city, but it's still a pain, and it's not as if you can do it every day for everything, especially limits at the border. Still, with our dollar at par for the better part of the last decade, food, books, tech and cars are all significantly marked up, even though we are but a half hour away. The misfortune of living close to the States is that we also get to know exactly how much they are saving on everything too.

You guys are in a comparatively inelastic market, which makes things worse. They can get away with charging more because you guys are willing to accept higher prices generally across the board, and unfortunately that is unlikely to change as the Aussie market has time and again demonstrated it's ability to absorb larger margins. Along with the whole sales tax quotation (which is not including in American pricing), transport barriers, market demands for both consoles, and the slight difference in the exchange rate (as well as likely larger differences in the CPI, which most analysis overlooks), Australia requires normally higher prices... and are willing to accept even higher prices on top of that.

It sucks fo' sho'.

Can I just ask, what's the reason for us Brits getting charged £349 when the exchange rate now (going by Google so god knows how accurate it is) makes $399 about £250? I don't care what anyone says, just over £100 is a fair bit of dosh. It's not as if the systems are built in America and then shipped over. So much for the advantages of having the strongest currency....

That's another thing - what's with it? It's not even an American console!

I would've expected higher prices for Aus to drop with the rise of internet shopping. We even have stores in Aus that specialize in buying games new from overseas and selling them at a realistic price. I've heard some retailers online are bumping up prices for Australians, but you'd wonder how they'll survive if there's someone giving real prices that you can buy from.

Part of it is, again, the fact that the VAT is included in the price that those in Britain see, as well as a handful of transport and supply chain differences. The major reason, though, is again the CPI. Brits are willing to pay more, partially because the price of that console is being placed against the prices of other goods in Britain. When people make decisions, they are comparing costs in a bundle that includes other goods in the area, not the same good across many areas.

The simple answer is that they charge more because they can charge more, and make more money off of it. Until the profit drops as Brits decide not to buy it at higher prices, prevailing market conditions will allow them to charge more. In part, too, I think they also consider the NA region to simply be more competitive, meaning they want to under-price competition more actively to get a larger market share.

WTF SONY!!!!

You said every PS4 will come bundled with a camera, I watched you say it back in February. That's a little un-fair now to go back on that.. Shame on you... First the PSplus requirement to play online & now this? The majority say you've won the console war, I'm not jumping on that bandwagon just yet... You're just drip feeding the info out to soften the blow... Well it ain't working.... :/
What. Stop.
Buy the camera yourself if you want it so badly, no need to make it required for everyone when they don't one and it'd just drop the price. <_
It's not that I want the camera that badly, I just think its a bit sneaky changing @ the last minute & not even announcing it. my first post was literally the first time I'd heard about, please excuse my rant.

I can understand & I agree with the move they've made. I'm a Sony gamer @ heart & will always consider the PS first over the Xbox & this years E3 had me jumping for joy when I watched the live stream & saw Sony hand it to MS, it was awesome!!!

...The last minute? If what you say is true, they announced the camera in Feb, and dropped it sometime before June. And the console launches in December.
Last minute?

If they put the camera in it would cost more. How it is, you can buy both if you want, but I don't have to.
Everyone wins. Everyone. So stop.

I don't need a camera but for a multiplayer you need ps+ is kinda sad but then again i thought about ps3 online gaming and its not that good when you get it for free so with ps+ requirement it will be better.

You need PS+ yes but you get free games every month so the subscription is more than worth it when you're downloading more than £39.99's worth of games. I mean currently PS+ on PS3 is worth about £800 which makes it insane value, I don't see many complaining about needing the service for multiplayer when the service pays for itself within a month or two.

with regards to PS+ being paid for and required, im not surprised and not bothered, im used to it as this gen i was mainly on the xbox side of gaming and live (which is shit in comparision) is £40 a year.

the reason im negative towards it is PS+ gives you MUCH more for your money, and now MicroCock have realised that people are transfering to the good ship Sony they too are offering free games for Gold members... games most people have already or games that are shit and not even selling in the "nobody wants to buy" bins...

I think what most people seem to think is that they'll get some sort of discount if they bundled it, something that does happen quite a bit with pack-ins. What they fail to realize is theres only so much that can be put into a bundle be fore it starts affecting the price.

As for PS+ at least its only for multiplayer rather than locking you out of just about everything. It actually offers quite a lot of value and theres a pretty good chance that streaming games through GaiKai will be added to it as a service.

i dont play online but i do plan to get ps+ when i get my ps4. i have only played online for more than an hour on 1 game, burnout paradise. i dont expect that to change much with the ps4. the reason o plan to get ps+ is for the games and other perks. as it is, i have netflix, hulu+, gamefly and sony music unlimited (yes, i'm one of the 78). an annual $50 is acceptable, especially if i were to buy on release day (which i guarantee i will not) because the only game i would by is the driving game (cant think of the name at the moment) which will probably cost $60 but is free for ps+ subscribers (from what i read). no need to buy the game, just add funds to you psn when you get home!
