When Square Enix took the stage at Sony's PlayStation 4 E3 2013 press conference everyone expected to see Final Fantasy Versus XIII turn into Final Fantasy XV. That happened. What came next shook down the stadium. A "surprise trailer" turned out to be the announcement of Kingdom Hearts III. It's been a long, cold console generation since Kingdom Hearts II was released for PS2. The wait is over. Fill in that hole in your heart.
While not much was revealed in the teaser trailer, we did get a look at Sora all dressed up for his PlayStation 4 reveal. No, Square Enix didn't turn him into one of their modern Japanese models like they make for Final Fantasy, but he does look like he's gotten a few texture resolution upgrades. He meanders along the beach, he discovers a keysword, he smiles.
Now the bad news. The announcement merely confirmed that Kingdom Hearts III was in development. There's no release date, no release window, officially confirmed for only PS4, and no depth to the announcement at ally beyond the acknowledgement that yeah... they should be making this, shouldn't they? Stay tuned for the official Kingdom Hearts III teaser and some assets as soon as we can get them from an official source.
... and of course, don't miss out on Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX coming exclusively to PlayStation 3 on September 10.
Update: Kingdom Hearts III has been confirmed for Xbox One. Both next-gen consoles, go!
