Crytek, the studio famous for the likes of Timesplitters and Crysis, have unveiled the first trailer for Ryse: Son of Rome at E3 2013. Ryse is now a third-person game instead of first-person, and is certainly controller-based based on some QTEs to kill your enemies. It is an Xbox One exclusive and a launch title at that, so it should make for some gloriously violent battles as you take control of the Roman general.
The trailer is nothing short of impressive, with beautiful graphics and combat that feels like it carries some weight to it. Oh, and there's lot of gore and blood and violence, so if you're a little squeamish this is your warning. As the trailer opens, your character is giving a speech to his troops in order to prepare them for the battle. Fire falls from the sky in the background, and a nearby ship isn't so fortunate. You and your troops start storming a beach à la Normandy, with arrows, boulders, and more coming at you. Troops fall beside your general, and then it's into the thick of battle.
It's a pretty hectic scene, with swords slashing, people falling, and arrows sticking everywhere. Executions and finishing moves are handled by QTEs, with access to around 100 different ones throughout the course of the game. During a post-Microsoft conference interview, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli explained the combat was sped up in the trailer, so everything won't be one or two hits and then QTE execution.
Expect more on Ryse: Son of Rome as E3 rolls on.
