Western audiences continue to demand more Tales games brought overseas, and Namco seems to at least be trying to meet said demand. Announcing Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, a bundle including an HD rework of Tales of Symphonia in addition its 2008 sequel Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Planned for release in "early 2014" for Europe, Australia and North America (Oct. 2013 in Japan), the ultimate Symphonia bundle will be here soon.
Olivier Comte, Senior Vice-President at Namco Bandai Games Europe, made the following address to fans:
"As a response to fans’ expectations to bring more Tales of titles to the West, we are very proud to join our headquarters in Japan and our colleagues in the US to make a worldwide announcement for Tales of Symphonia Chronicles. The Tales of series, which is already very successful in Japan, has been expanding greatly in the Western market, and we believe J-RPG fans will continue being pleased with this updated HD edition of two of the most classic Tales of games."
While it's adorable that Namco Bandai continues to make Tales fans believe they're a priority, a majority of their titles continue to have their global releases delayed for extended periods of time. Tales of Xilia, originally released in September of 2011, will only just be released overseas come thus August. Tales of Xilia 2 is already out overseas, but don't expect it to come our way for quite some time.
Even this HD reboot of Tales of Symphonia, a port of one of the best GameCube titles ever made and a hugely popular title the world over, won't be seeing global release. It's likely that fans of the franchise will have to wait at least thee to four months, but likely more, before the PlayStation 3 game is released. And on top of that, it'll be released for a platform that will potentially be in its death throes as the PlayStation 4 takes the lead. The PlayStation 4, of course, has no backwards compatibility.
Don't take me wrong, and HD update of Tales of Symphonia packaged with its Wii sequel the Dawn of the New World is amazing. I love the Tales franchise and I can't wait to play one of my favorite GameCube games all over again. However, I don't like being treated like an afterthought, like my purchase is a forgone conclusion no matter when the game is released.
Tales of Symphonia Chronicles will be released in "early 2014" for the PlayStation 3. They heard us asking for it, maybe they'll hear us asking for it to be brought over a littler earlier, or potentially as a downloadable title on the PlayStation 4.
