Interesting, I'm not sure what Microsoft's reasoning behind this is, as I can only see it hurting business. In my opinion, it makes the Xbox more of the serious gamer console, even more so than just paying for online services. I'd like to hear their reasoning for this, that's for sure.

Microsoft, not exactly known for being forward thinkers or embracing new ideas.

Right, because they weren't the pioneers for online centralized services for consoles.

"For Consoles" For a console that was little more than pc parts thrown into an X-tra big ass BOX.

If it was so easy why did it take Sony two generations just to catch up? And Nintendo's online is practically nonexistent

I know right?
Why watch TV on your TV, when you can watch Tv on your Xbox, on your TV!
This is rocket-science level stuff, man.

You're barking up the wrong tree with that, I'm a PC gamer. Centralization and simplification are for you 'console gamers'. I like options, as many interchangeable or replaceable options as possible. Customization is a beautiful thing.

If you really want to split hairs about it the Dreamcast pioneered it (building on some ideas from previous consoles) and microsoft built from their ideas with a few of their own. It had web browsers, video playback over the internet, ran java, and even had mouse support.

A service they greatly overcharge for because they have the whole system locked down as bad as Apple's iEverything set of gadgets and software.

Two generations? The ps3 is only one generation off from the Xbox. Surely there are better online services than what the PS3 offers, far better, but to deny its existence completely is to be blind.

What's the big deal even though I've washed my hands from xbox and on the fence with sony they ssid it will work the same. Personally I'm just really thinking about what kind of rig to build time to join the elitist.

Dreamcast wasn't centralized. PS2 online was hit or miss. Ps3 online just recently implemented features Xbox Live has had since launch.

Move along

Love 'em or hate 'em, Microsoft also revolutionized online gaming for the console market.

Search for their 2005 E3 conference and watch it. It's an interesting reminder of that. No doubt many viewers laughed then at the notion of putting so much money, resources, and overall effort into creating this online network for a console. Who would want that? Who would pay for it?

Now look at LIVE. And look at Sony's efforts to improve PSN in much the same way. Progress isn't made without risk. Not all risks pay off, but the last one MS made sure paid off.

I wouldn't exactly call putting a bunch of existing programs together "pioneering" anything, all they really did was blur the line between PCs and consoles even farther. I don't think they revolutionized console gaming so much as hasten it to the next step down the line, I find it hard to believe neither Sony nor Nintendo wouldn't have gone in the direction they did without Microsoft.
