yet more lay offs...seems like if you want to make a game thats not a linear cloned fps that lasts just 4 hours or you wont let any of the super publishers buy your dev company then you are shut down...innovation is what made games great...but now its all about how much money you can make instead of how can you top your last game...and sadly i think these announcements will just keep coming...my condolences to the people who were fired.

Knew this was coming. Defiance's dev team was near 150 strong and the goal was to keep all 150 active post-launch. That just does not happen with the type of game Defiance is. Defiance ia also oriented in design to casual play. You don't feel a loss when you don't play for a month and come back to it, where as other MMO's make you feel like you're 500 miles behind others. As Defiance is mostly coop oriented, there's no competition there, and the PVP aspect is very limited (fun, but limited). It was really a no-brainer.

Glad to say i'm hooked on the TV show and I think it's doing well. As for the game's content, it's been slow to update, partially because everything on XBL and PSN has an arduous wait time in the QA queue. By the time a much needed patch can be released, the game may no longer be relevant in a players eyes. I <3 the game but I don't play it often as I do other games for the above mentioned reason. I feel like I can plug into it and do my own thing at my own pace. I don't hold that against the game, I love it, but as it's supposed to be an MMO it doesn't feel like one, and you can relegate it to a solo experience too easily.

The rift cystals...i mean ark crystals...i mean rift crystals... yeah, that wasn't really catering to the design of the show, and was more of a copy paste design, and there are several other copy paste designs taken from other games. In that sense the game isn't entirely unique enough, and when you look at an MMO you need to have that. It just isn't surprising at all.

IE: DC Universe Online now runs on less than 20 devs that are always behind schedule, and that game is considered a 'success'.

I agree with everything Raijin's said regarding Defiance.

I really like the game but it's very lacking in content (items, outfits, etc); it's a solid game to play though but I wish there was more to it.

Technically Rift has a month before it goes f2p, but the news is starting to flow out. Trion did a stream on twitch today introducing a good chunk of the changes. So far the move has proved a massive success for Trion, as one of their current Trial-use servers hit population cap a day or two ago, a first in the entire history of the game for a trial server.

Defiance, yeah I have heard nothing but worrying things from that front. Not surprised to hear about layoffs from that front. I hear from some that it's just bad and a failure, and others say basically what Raijin said, that it's interesting or good, but lacking in some important aspect. If Defiance had come out before MMOFPS started growing, maybe it could have had better footing? But now its competing with Planetside 2, and Firefall, and that could be a hard battle to fight.

Employees being escorted out, I remember somebody saying something smart about that the last time it came up. tekmosis was it you? Mentioning something about it's a precaution to make sure they don't explode some data in anger or frustration.

...I wonder how this all affects End of Nations?

I believe they get escorted out as a form of data protection to ensure none of the data is copied and used in any way with the competition. When you have such a large group sometimes they move together to the same competing studio and could use any acquired data as leverage in some form.
