While no Nintendo games were announced during today's Nintendo Direct event, two Sonic the Hedghog games were. Introducing Sonic Lost World, an action adventure platformer coming exclusively to the Wii U and 3DS Yes, exclusive to Nintendo platforms. That's because Nintendo and Sega have entered into a "worldwide partnership" for the Sonic franchise.
Beyond the one piece of concept art, or perhaps it's a screen capture of a cinematic, there's no other news related to Sonic Lost World available. Nintendo President Iwata promises that more details will be announced prior to E3, which starts June 11.
The bigger news, of course, is Nintendo's exclusive partnership with Sega for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Does this mean Sonic will remain a mainstay in all of the Nintendo sports and party titles? Sonic confirmed for the Super Smash Bros. Wii U roster? Or is this just Sega trying to find a way to keep Sonic profitable after quite a few years of floundering? Hmm.
Sonic Lost World, judging from the above screen capture, has certainly piqued my interest. The tile-based world with several different biomes to explore stirs my hopes. Is this a potentially open-world exploration game? Or perhaps a throwback to classic 3D platformers like Banjo Kazooie? Ah, E3 can't come soon enough.
