There's something about WildStar. As a well traveled journeyman of MMOs, the first thing I've got to say about the upcoming game is, well, it's not different. Period. It seems to be a rather typical MMO in terms of progression and mechanics -- there's still plenty to be announced though, for sure. That said, the way Carbine packages and discusses all aspects of their game is just so damn charming. It's impossible not to look forward to more.
Take for instance the latest WildStar DevSpeak trailer, "Movement." Yes, it's exactly as it sounds, a trailer entirely about movement in an MMO. Yes, they go over the basics of WASD and camera controls for movement, some jumping too. Yes, there are some interesting movement features like double jump, temporary sprinting and dodging. It should be boring, but for every second of this trailer I was smiling like an eight year old with an ice cream cone.
It's just fun. WildStar's content team know how to make things fun. For instance, I know when I actually play WildStar I'll be bored walking around the world at times, frustrated at the limitations of sprinting, and jealous of classes with movement skills. Yet here I am giggling. It's over the top, self aware and entirely ridiculous. Mostly though, it's just fun. Keep it up Carbine.
WildStar is planned for release on PC in 2013. Beta is slowly rolling out, with an apparent closed stress test occurring very soon. Basically, they're working on it. Keep your pants on.
