We've heard rumors on top of rumors about the upcoming release of Gran Turismo 6, but not even the briefest of mention from Sony of Polyphony Digital. That's now changed, with the announcement of the Gran Turismo 15th Anniversary Event on May 15. On top of reminiscing about all the great cars we've ooo'd and ahh'd about over the years, Sony' also teasing "what's next." Gran Turismo 6. It's Gran Turismo 6.
Jim Ryan, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, teasing the GT announcement to come at the event:
"The Gran Turismo franchise continues to be extremely important to PlayStation. We felt that 15 years of GT was an event worth celebrating along with our colleagues from the Americas, Asia and Japan. We are very grateful to our manufacturer partners for helping us to bring together a fantastic event. As well as experiencing the development of the game and comparing the virtual and real, it will be a pleasure to see Yamauchi-san and hear what’s next for Gran Turismo."
It's understandable that with the big announcement of the PlayStation 4, Sony didn't want to throw Gran Turismo 6, rumored to be a current-gen release, out to the wolves. Still, it feels like we should have known about this game long before the next-gen buzz started. Comparisons are going to be made between Gran Turismo 6 and Drive Club straight away. Then we've got Microsoft's next-gen event coming up and who knows what racing game will come to fruition there.
Still, I guess in the long run, Gran Turismo stands on its own. That's why we're celebrating 15 years next week, and not just an ordinary 15 years -- 15 years of the highest quality driving experiences available. Current-gen or next-gen, whatever Gran Turismo 6 is we know we can set our expectations very high.
May 15, put it on your schedule racing game fans. What's Sony got in store for Gran Turismo going into its next 15 years?
