Wow. Bethesda has just announced Wolfenstein: A New Order, the first title from relatively young developer MachineGames. For those unknowing, MachineGames formed in 2009 from a number of talented folk departing from Starbreeze Games. Their previous experience includes The Darkness and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. And now they're working on a reimagining of Wolfenstein. Wow.
What do I mean by reimagining? Well, the announcement trailer doesn't provide too much perspective, but for now all that Bethesda and MachineGames wants to say is that the series is now going in a "gripping and dramatic" direction. Further details will be revealed on May 8.
Jen Matthies, Creative Director on Wolfenstein at MachineGames, offered the following statement:
"We are excited to bring a new chapter of Wolfenstein to gamers everywhere. As fans of the series, working on this game is an honor, and our team is driven to create an unforgettable action-adventure experience that will make FPS fans proud."
I'm absolutely flabbergasted. Wolfenstein: A New Order's announcement trailer looks outstanding. My favorite part? "They're rewriting history. But they forgot about me." Still, it seems like such an insanely different property than what I know. Jimi Hendrix' "All Along the Watchtower" blasting in the background, no blood at all, the Statue of Liberty burning. Whatever this so-called "Action Adventure" is, I'm a little bit scared and a whole lot excited.
Wolfenstein: A New Order is coming to PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and next-gen consoles for release in Q4 2013. Stay tuned for updates as we hear more.
