Oh dear. Oh my. According to IGN the original creators of cult horror game Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, including Denis Dyack, will start a crowdfunding campaign for a spiritual successor on Monday. Titled Shadow of the Eternals, the game is said to be in development by Precursor Games, a young studio formed in July of 2012. Details are scant, but this trailer certainly sets the mood perfectly.
Some digging by NeoGAF pulled up some more clues, including an old cached web page from Precursor's website referring to the game as Shadow of the Ancients. Perhaps the term ancients was two referential to the material in Eternal Darkness, and they instead shifted to Eternals for legal safety. The page states that the game will be episodic, featuring twelve episodes, each 2-4 hours in length. Expected launch date? Q3 in 2014 for the PC and... THE WII U. Glory!
The page goes on the say they'll require $1.1 million in crowdfunding support, and anything beyond will, "contribute to future episodes, additional characters, in-game perks, and additional platforms." Feel free to check out the cache'd page for all of the extra details, including backer rewards. The project will not, however, be coming to Kickstarter, as apparently Precursor is not in the US or UK -- a requirement of Kickstarter.
Let's get this straight, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem may be one of the best horror titles to be released in the past ten years. It never really got the respect it deserved because if its GameCube origins and rather chunky controls, but that hardly matters in the long term. Anything remotely related to the game gets my money and fervor. Bring on Shadow of the Eternals, Precursor Games. I need it. Now.
Here's the description of the Shadow of the Eternals pulled from Precursor's cached page, followed by the trailer (IGN exclusive). Keep in mind these are non-official details and that things could have changed by the official reveal on Monday:
"When Detective Paul Becker is called to one of the bloodiest gang massacres in Louisiana state history, only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults. As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections will uncover the truth about the ‘Ancients’.
Shadow of the Ancients is a sequel to the critically acclaimed Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Reqiuem. Featuring an ensemble cast of heroes and villains, the game will span over 2500 years of history throughout Egypt, England, Hungary, and the United States. Players will question the perception of reality as they try to balance the mechanics of combat, magick, and sanity events to progress through the adventure.
Shadow of the Ancients will take players on a memorable journey throughout time; weaving historical fact with disturbing fiction to create an experience unlike any other."
