Probably because they aren't introduced in TOR, but have been part of star wars for the better part of a decade. Though you'll mostly find them in books and comics.

Im getting tired of all these computer game reviewers bashing Cathar. They have been apart of the Star Wars lore for years. Its not some new thing they cooked up to be a main stay. There was a poll taken for a new race. I was apart of it. Top three were Cathar, Wookie, and Togruta. Cathar had only the win by a few hundred votes.

So stop calling it a cheep move! or some made up thing to appease fans!

Looking at that trooper cathar I can't help but feel Ron Perlman has become a face model for TOR.

Cathar have been in Star Wars since 1994, and have been one of the major races in the SWTOR series. To say they're only being added to compete with other MMO's is silly.
This.
Cathar also existed in the original KotOR.
One Cathar existed in KotOR, and compared to all the other races (most of whom have made appearances in KotOR) it's lead a relatively minor existence in the Star Wars canon. Plus, I don't remember Cathar looking quite like they do here -- at the very least, they did not have so much fur.

Besides, there's dozens of races, like Rodians, not involved in the game, so this isn't correcting a grievous record of ignoring the major races. It doesn't really matter whether or not they existed in the game before, it's just hard to really see why the Cathar's addition is a big deal itself. At least, my own view.
Yep, Juhani had close to no fur.
It would be nice for them to add Selkath or something.
But since this game is involved with EA, they are only adding stuff they can earn money off.

In my defense, it's the generic people who are racist, not me. I have no problem with those hairball spewing abominations of nature, personally. *grins*

Pfft, unless they are buxom young nubile catgirls from anime, the majority of people will NEVER care about the plight of cat people.

I just don't want to be in a firefight during a group instance while one of my team mates is busy keeling over, taking care of a hairball.

I am looking forward to this as this is the biggest update to date and if any one hasn't noticed the The Old Republic servers are about to blow up they are so overpopulated since going F2P and I am afraid the cat people will make those servers kaput! xD

Bioware has already added the HK-51 companion (updated version of HK-47 from kotor 1 & 2) few patches ago so the Cathar is one of many on the add-to-list I hope, and the most recent digital expansion added the notorious credit hungry Hutt cartel into the mix which makes smuggled goods very interesting.

Since the panda game has extremely low pop servers now a good alternative is the Old Republic, believe me it grows on you just give it a shot.
