Company of Heroes 2 doesn't have too much longer to go before fans everywhere can get their hands on it, and now there's one more reason to look forward to June 25. Developer Relic Entertainment announced the new Theater of War mode earlier today, which is a series of missions showcasing other battles between the Germans and Russians outside of the main campaign's focus. Oh, and it features both single player and co-operative levels.
The 1941 pack of Theater of War missions is being included with every copy of COH 2. A total of 18 missions are available (nine each for the Germans and Russians), which is an impressive number considering the main campaign has 14 missions. However, while the main campaign is a story about the war, these Theater of War missions look to everything else. Relic spokesman Simon Watts described it thusly:
"It allows the player to get used to different kinds of multiplayer strategies in solo missions. With Theater of War, we have a mission pack to tell a story within the larger war. We held this as a surprise until the end."
Some missions may only involve two or three infantry squads that you have to secure a series of points with, or maybe a couple of infantry squads and a tank to try a win a map. The AI you face is going to employ different tactics, too, in order to better simulate a multiplayer experience. One AI may decide to play turtle while another amasses as many tanks as possible to rush you. There are even going to be co-op missions so you don't have to go it alone.
One co-op mission involves holding out for three days and nights against the enemy. There'll be a morning artillery strike at your disposal, but otherwise you and your friend are on your own.
Relic plans to expand the Theater of War missions after the game launches. It'll allow for a way to make new DLC without trying to shoehorn it into the base game, as the developer can show battles in later years. Missions set in 1944 are going to look vastly different than those in 1941, with new technology, commanders, and even different battle lines. A mini-pack for Theater of War is still included for anyone who pre-orders Company of Heroes 2, but Relic didn't specify what that one entailed.
