I've been following Mars: War Logs for some time now, the downloadable cyberpunk RPG from The Testament of Sherlock Holmes' developer Spiders. Today's the day, as the game has officially launched on PC (soon to come to XBLA and PSN) judging from the title's launch trailer it's going to be hard to pass up. Mars, technomancy, an oppressive government, and whatever that giant skull-spider-monster is -- sold.
Here's a short description of Mars: War Logs' gameplay as provided by the game's launch press release:
"Follow an immense main quest in which every choice counts, develop your character and your combat style by choosing among many different talents and skills. In dynamic, real-time combat, face fearsome opponents including some of the most terrifying creatures of Mars. The craft system lets you create and modify your equipment, your weapons and your armor.
Your behavior during dialogues, as well as your choices and decisions will influence your companions and the fate of the people who will cross your path… and maybe the fate of all the colonies on Mars."
As is clear, this is an RPG through and through. I'm remiss to directly compare the game to anything, but it's hard not to what it being a new IP. Judging from the trailer Mars: War Logs looks to take inspiration from BioWare's recent RPGs Mass Effect and Dragon Age, but also from Bethesda's Fallout. Still, the gameplay we've seen looks very hands on, reminding me a bit of Deus Ex -- there was even a moment where I thought, "That's from Wind Waker!" So, we're back at the start -- Mars: War Logs is and RPG with plenty of great RPGs to take inspirations from.
Pick up Mars: War Logs on PC today, it's currently listed in Steam for only $19.99. The game should be coming to XBLA and PSN "very soon" too, as they're likely just waiting for Microsoft and Sony to push the game out to everyone. Check out the launch trailer below and see if Mars: War Logs is something for you.
