Introducing "The Watch," Ubisoft's new "VIP Program" for the Assassin's Creed community. The Watch is a web hub where exclusive videos, art, teasers and an assortment of other content will be released early just for members. The hub will also aggregate various Assassin's Creed related social media, so The Watch members will be on top of news. That catch? Membership of the watch is exclusively a preorder bonus for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
Here's just a taste of all the content Ubisoft is promising as part of their Assassin's Creed VIP Program, which will be available on PC or on mobile devices:
"The Watch will allow members to delve deeper into the Assassin’s Creed Universe and enjoy exclusive tailored content, as well as early access to the latest information, ensuring the community are the first to know about upcoming events, shows, talks and releases on the brand.
The Watch will bring the community closer to Assassin’s Creed than ever before via regular in-depth features exploring a variety of different themes, including the characters, setting, places, cultural inspirations and other game related elements.
The Assassin’s Creed universe also lives through the fans’ voice and creations, so The Watch also allows members to follow Assassin’s Creed related social media and discussions, discover and ‘like’ other member’s content and upload their own, and compare their skills and achievements! Key members of the community will also be chosen to update a special “Experts” section to share their deep knowledge on the universe.
The Watch will also introduce unique member quests to compete in, unlocking specific missions, special rewards and bonuses. These timed missions will only be available through The Watch and participants will be able to track themselves and other members through global leaderboards."
I have a bit of a problem with this being referred to as a VIP program. Preordering isn't exactly a difficult thing to do, let alone a rare occurrence. The Watch seems like something Ubisoft should want as many Assassin's Creed fans as possible to participate in, not put it behind a wall of false exclusivity. Such is the nature of preorder bonuses though. There's more value to them in name than in practice.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will be released on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U on October 29, with a PlayStation 4 (and likely next-gen Xbox) release later on. For more information on The Watch check out the trailer below, or check out the official website here: link.
