Last summer, Hidden Path Entertainment launched a Kickstarter page for an expansion pack to Defense Grid: The Awakening, as well as a sequel. The initial goal was just for the expansion, with stretch goals to cover the rest. Unfortunately, only the expansion was funded, but thanks to an investor, Defense Grid 2 is now a reality. Hidden Path founders Jeff Pobst and Jim Garbarini made the announcement earlier today, with DG2 due to arrive in the first half of next year.
Neither Pobst or Garbarini were willing to divulge just who the investor is, but both could barely contain their excitement in letting everyone know about DG2. They expressed their utmost thanks to the nearly 6,300 Kickstarter backers who made it a possibility, as the project can now be seen as a true success. Pobst had the following to say about the fans and DG2:
Through the DG2 Kickstarter campaign we were able to not only raise money and make more Defense Grid content, but we created a shared engagement around the project with thousands of backers for several months. The excitement, involvement, and passion that the community displayed around Defense Grid directly helped us engage an investment partner and make DG2 a reality.
It's fantastic news to see one of the best tower defense games in recent years get a well deserved sequel. Everything in DG2 is getting expanded upon, with new towers, enemies, and even multiple locations for the power cores on each level. There's even going to be competitive and co-operative multiplayer, plus support for user created content. Oh, and an entirely new game engine, too. It's also going to release on Mac and Linux in addition to Windows.
As an additional thank you to the Kickstarter backers, Hidden Path is going to give all 6,291 of them a copy of Defense Grid 2 for free. It was originally promised when the Kickstarter launched, but until now it wasn't known if the sequel would ever happen. Now that it is, the developer is keeping to its word, and all the Kickstarter backers have one more thing to be happy about.
Defense Grid: Containment, the expansion pack, released this past January, along with some community levels. The base game and select DLC are 75% off this weekend on Steam as a way to celebrate news of the sequel.
