Next week Nintendo is launching their Virtual Console service for the Nintendo Wii, according to an announcement in today's Nintendo Direct event. At least six games are confirmed for the launch, including Super Metroid and Super Mario World, along with the promise of Game Boy Advance and Nintendo 64 games in the future. Nintendo then used the reveal as the foundation of an even bigger announcement: EarthBound is coming back.
EarthBound, the North American port of Japan's Mother 2, hasn't been mentioned by Nintendo of America since it original launched on the SNES in 1995. Whether that was due to licensing issues or simple apathy, it's no lie that it feels like a miracle this is finally happening. Of course there's no word on the original Mother RPG or the third game Mother 3, but maybe that will happen if EarthBound has a solid reception in western markets.
Unfortunately, EarthBound won't be released until late 2013, but as I said before it's tough not being thankful it's coming overseas in the first place. Wow. It's actually happening. EarthBound is coming to the Wii U's Virtual Console in North America and Europe. There are few moments I'm speechless, but this is one of them. Hooray!
