Earlier today during the Nintendo Direct event Nintendo's President Iwata showed us Pikmin 3's newest Pikmin, a pink flying creature that now adorns the game's box art along with the other new rock Pikmin. As the event ended, however, many Nintendo fans felt their hearts drops -- no release date had been announced. Nintendo of America to the rescue, who later announced the game, and its cute flying Pikmin, would hit the Wii U on August 4.
Effectively, this is a huge delay. Pikmin 3 was originally planned for the Wii U's "launch window" which was defined as ending with March. Intstead, the game will be released four months later. There's probably a story behind that, and it likely begins and ends with the dropping the game in the middle of the console's launch drought. August will be much better for taking the console into this year's holiday months.
Now that the release date is out of the way, along with what we assume must be the announcement of all the new Pikmin, hopefully Nintendo will start showing some meatier parts of Pikmin 3. I'd love to see a full level or some of the meaningful objectives we'll be digging through. Maybe at E3 this year? For now check out the screenshots of the new Pikmin, or follow this link to the gameplay footage shown during today's Nintendo Direct: Youtube.
