its just funny that me and Phil Anselmo are the only ones that seem to be able to figure out the ads are not trying to sell you crap you dont need like TV commercials, which you guys dont seem to be complaining about (despite TV being a paid service). theyre telling you about games, DLC or new Xbox apps you might be interested in. whats more, you can use LB and RB to zoom around the dashboard quickly to whatever section you want to be, AND the home screen boots up to the game disc tile with "My Pins" right below where you can pin anything you use often for quick access.

-edit, also, guys you realize your posts are being put on links right on the main page of neo, for all to see, can we class things up around here or what?
youre asking quite a lot of us, sir.

Ads are usually intended to help fund or pay for something your not directly paying for, yet Xbox live is a payed service and the membership fee is supposed to be there to cover costs. So then why exactly are the ads there in the first place? Why is the Xbox the only console that currently feature ads while also being the only one requiring a fee to use most of its features?
Usually, yes. In this case? No. The ads on the dashboard promote games or marketplace content, sales, new products, etc.. they're actually pretty damn useful.

I pay for cable, guess I shouldn't have to watch commercials. /logic
Maybe to you but as I said not everybody wants these ads taking up space and possibly bandwidth, and its better to speak up than, to quote Adam Orth, "deal with it".

As for your second argument, you don't buy an expensive proprietary box made by your cable provider just to use their service, now do you? You pay upwards of $100 for their console, subscribe to a yearly membership, and they still feel the need to run ads on your console.

Another key difference here is that typically the console manufacturers receive royalties from the publishers, while cable/satellite providers and companies like Netflix pay the networks.

Calling it 'Xbox' is a worse move than 'Wii U'. Do the three companies not pay attention to what the other two are doing or something?

You didn't just see the Windows Phone ad on the first link I showed you, or were you raging too much to see it? That's not really related to gaming content, it's just promoting a terrible phone.

That would seem like it would be the case, right? A darn shame we've been sucked into that scheme and now we barely notice it. But TV was free at one time, maybe that's where the ads started getting thrown in, then we just kinda got used to it.

I'm done here, Epoch has convinced me to quit, thanks for that. I'll still follow this thread though, just to see how far the XBox fanboys will go to defend their products. We'll see if I get a good laugh out of that.

I find the dashboard ads quite useful at times. They're great for finding out about game sales you'd otherwise never hear about.

I don't really understand why people are complaining so much about them. Sure, you pay a yearly subscription to play online and you'd like it to be ad-free, but it's not exactly like you have to watch a 30-second commercial (YouTube), pause your game every half hour for another advertisement (Spotify and other music streaming programs) or even click the links. They're there to inform - whether you take notice or not is your own decision. Hell, they're not even intrusive.

Let's just end this. Microsoft puts up ads to make money, people don't like it...just don't look at them. Its not that hard

I lease an HD box for $10 a month for 24 months with an early cancellation fee, it costs $300 if I don't return it. I pay $60 a month (xbl is $40 a year, less than $4 a month) yet I still have to watch 10 minutes of commercials per 20 minutes of programming, and these ads interrupt me from my programming.

You guys seem to have no idea how the real world works. I'm guessing from your comments ("my dad didn't pay this blah blah") you don't handle your own finances thus think XBL is a ripoff when it really isn't.

You're grasping at straws to compare apples to oranges. I'm done here.

I dont understand why you people are bickering, of course some people will not like the adds, and of course some people will.

Cant we all agree that hitler was an idiot and let people be who they are and like what they want without getting all rude and trolly about it?

Honestly, i know this is the internet, but who the hell cares if you dont like that someone else like adds or vice versa.

Anyone who expresses an opinion, and then gets all offensive/offended when someone else expresses a different opinion, in in fact, childish.

Grow up people.

-edit

Then again, ive played on xbox live enough to know it is filled with little 8-12 year old kids who act exactly like this,
I am sure i am wasting my time here.

Exactly, its a lease, your essentially renting it for the duration of your service.the Xbox on the other hand is something you purchase. The cable/satellite companies also hold a monopoly something the video game industry does have. If enough people express their dissatisfaction on the matter Microsoft could very well change it but obviously not enough people have a problem with it, that doesn't mean those that do are wrong either. That has been my entire point, your the one claiming we're making a mountain out of a mole hill. All I have done was point out valid reasons for why people might not like these ads, while you've been either ignoring or picking through them and basing the validity of my argument based solely on the points you feel you can debunk.

I heard months ago, months and months, that all the nextgens would be 250-300, due to the crappy economy.

I hope this is true, i would say that 95% of the people who use these consoles cant afford to pay 500$ for one, and if that price is true, and the trend continues to the NEXT nextgen, we would be looking at 700$.

The line has to be drawn somewhere.

I would only complain about ads if they were intrusive, obstructing and just an overall annoyance. This is the new reality. This is the cost of improving technology in a worsening economy. Granted the technology as is will get cheaper over time. Same with games - They will get cheaper over time. But brand new, it will be expensive. It is not a monopoly also. If you can always opt for the PS4 assuming they will be less stingy for your taste or PC gaming which is usually not centrally controlled at all.

I don't really see what the big deal is with the ads, I personally don't find them intruding it's not like there is something else I rather there. I think the dashboard is very well designed. If I want to play a game, I just mash A once I turn on my console until the game starts. But I also say they are very useful, I do like looking at the sales. Anything I can get cheaper is a plus.

If the ads weren't there what would you rather have there just wondering?

When the WiiU is $350 you expect the next Xbox and PS4 to be $250 lol....;

good question. what would you guys fill the empty spaces with? or would you rather the home page just have the game disc tile, My Pins and whatever else is below those 2? that would be pretty empty.
