Mark Jacobs, the creative voice behind Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online, has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a brand spanking new MMO. Introducing Camelot Unchained, a so-called niche MMO based around "Tri-Realm" combat and three gameplay pillars: RvR, crafting and housing. Jacobs is asking for $2 million in backer funding, on top of which he'll donate $2 million of his own money and another million from third parties.
"What, what?" you might be asking yourself. "Mark Jacobs wants to make another MMO based around inter-factional war?" Yes indeed, apparently Mark can't get enough of this type of MMO. He believes that publishers aren't interested in offering smaller-scale MMOs that deliver rich, niche experience anymore -- so he'll do it instead. Camelot Unchained will not be a WoW-killer, it'll only be exactly what Kickstarter backers want.
As for what sort of experience players can expect from Camelot Unchained, Jacobs has a few details for gamers. There's been a near-cataclysmic event called the "Piercing of the Veil" where Magic's introduction the world caused has brought us all to the brink of extinction. Three remaining factions battle for what's left, the Viking, the Arthurians, and the Tuatha De Danann. Each faction will have their own unique classes based around an expanded trinity -- healers, DPS, tanks, and crafters. Yes, crafters get their very own class!
Obviously, with the Kickstarter just launching details on Camelot Unchained are fairly vague. Over the 30 days of the campaign, however, Jacobs plans to reveal much more about the game. Luckily, he may not have to. The game has already pulled in near $500,000 of its initial $2 million goal on its first day. I'm going to go ahead and say look forward to more information (like Camelot Unchained's successful backing) very soon.
