Harmonix has released Don McLean's American Pie as a Rock Band download. Actually, it's the last weekly DLC you'll see from Rock Band, as McLean's iconic 1971 hit marks the end of weekly new downloadable releases. Hey, we couldn't think of a more appropriate song to end things with.
The song is now available for Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. Prices range from $1.99 USD, £1.19 UK, and €1.49 EU; that's 160 Microsoft Points or 200 Wii Points. Standard singles pricing.
American Pie is the final entry to 281 consecutive weeks of DLC. Harmonix estimates that Rock Band has since racked up over 1,400 artists to its collection, with more than 4,000 tracks via disc and download purchase. If you'd care to challenge that number, go ahead and count them up yourself here, on the website's complete track list. Good luck with that.
It's been over five years of weekly DLC, and according to Harmonix, more than 130 million songs have been sold through the Rock Band Music Store since it went up in November 2007.
Now if you're still an avid Rock Band fan, don't freak out. Just because weekly DLC is a thing of the past, Harmonix plans to continue support for the community through ongoing Rock Band Network releases, promotions, and general server support. In the company's own words: "Rock and Roll never dies, and Rock Band will keep rocking for ywars to come."
Rock on, Harmonix.
