Oh dear. Now Mojang has joined in on the April Fool's Day game and they're doing it as only they can -- extremely Minecraft-tastically. Rather than tease an 8-bit (err) version of the game or a movie, Mojang appears to have released a beta version of Minecraft 2 featuring huge changes for the first of April that turns the game... insane. Not sure if it'll ever go live, but instead there's over a dozen "Let's Play" videos made from the community.
Here's a quote from the official patch notes for Minecraft version 2.0:
"Hopefully releasing within the next two months, this 2-years-in-development game will be bringing blocky simulation games to the next level. Whilst based off the original Minecraft engine, this new version completely overhauls major parts of the game and contains many weeks worth of new content and blocks."
Some of the more prominent features of Minecraft 2.0 include a new Super Hostile mode which can suddenly populate the world with terrifying monsters, Diamond Chickens that lay diamond eggs, and horses that look rather like cows. Also, animals explode into meat if you feed them. There are seriously dozens of other epic changes designed to make hardcore Minecrafters laugh. Check out the full list.
It really can't be understated how great of an April Fool's joke this is. While it may not go live for every player to try out, Mojang did get a ton of community members to make a ton of hilarious videos for fans to watch. Unfortunately, I don't recognize any of their names, so I'll just embed one at the end of this post at random. Again, they're all available on Mojang's update.
Now that I look at this full list, some of these Minecraft patch notes wouldn't be so bad. Also, Minecraft 2? Make it so.
