The last April Fool's Joke I was expecting to make me laugh so hard was one from Sports Interactive, creators of the ultra-popular Football Manager franchise. The latest in the series football management simulators will be Football Manager 1888, helping The Football League celebrate their 125 anniversary by going back. Way back. In the year 1888 there were 12 teams, few rules, and blood on the field.
Here's a shortlist of rules changes (technically absence of rules) and odd situations that managers will have to deal with in the 1888 season:
- No substitutions during matches
- No off-sides rule
- Dangerous tackles without fear of being sent off or penalty
- Retirement after serious injury
- Players drafted into army
As gamers can see, being a soccer/football player in 1888 was a very risky thing to do. Hopefully, with an all new "late 19th century" interface player will feel comfortable with the time shift, though in all honesty the current design is like a Rubik's Cube to me, too.
Here's a quote from Sports Interactive's Studio Director Miles Jacobson:
"This latest addition to the Football Manager family is so good, it's unreal. We've worked hard to recreate the excitement of Victorian football and the results have to be seen to be believed."
Football Manager 2013 was released on PC in November of last year. Make sure to check out the images below for a look at Football Manager 1888, or check the official website for more details.
