Has your mind been blown yet today? Well then, check out these sample pictures and tech demo from Activision research and development, because they are a sight to behold. Activision R&D presented some new hyper-realistic facial animation technology at GDC today, showing just how far video games have come, while walking ever deeper into uncanny valley.
The images in the gallery below (and the one above), plus the video demonstrating this impressive technology, are not actually indicative of any sort of gameplay we'll be seeing any time soon. It's important to keep that distinction. Even so, Activision is saying that all this was generated using consumer-grade, current-gen hardware. Not that we expect your average gamer to go out and do this sort of work.
It's so realistic that many people will probably need to be told that these are computer animated faces. A closer look does reveal imperfections that set these apart from real human beings, but you could easily lose yourself in the sheer wonder. Have a look for yourselves.
