Surprise twist, Metal Gear Solid V has been confirmed as both the previous rumored Phantom Pain and Ground Zeroes. At the Konami GDC conference this morning, Kojima officially unveils Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain with an... interesting gameplay segment.
In it, we see the enigmatic (and creepy-looking) Joakim Mogren, as he rouses Snake from a coma. Though it's not really him, as the fellow opens the whole sequence with a Moby Dick reference: "I've been watching over you for 9 years. Call me Ishmael."
So Snake's been out for about nine years with this dude just watching him. The hospital isn't a very nice one either, and the two must sneak their way to freedom. Well,
Mogren Ishmael gets to crouch, while Snake crawls around on the cold tile floors. At least he has pants, because Ishmael doesn't.
I can only imagine what Snake was thinking when his companion unhelpfully suggests, "Let's take the stairs."
Phantom Pain will be an open world experience, though the starting sequence with these two is on-rails. The enemy is currently unknown to them and us, though a rather villainous figure wearing a heavy coat does appears near the end of the video, walking through some flames toward our two disoriented patients.
