To the Moon prequel announced, A Bird Story is a surreal adventure into a boy's imagination
No Dr. Watts or Dr. Rosaline, but a significant connection nonetheless
Yesterday saw the release of a teaser for A Bird Story, which we assumed at first to be To the Moon's sequel. Today's official announcement, however, shows that A Bird Story isn't quite what we thought it was. Instead of a sequel, the game is a prequel, taking place in the same universe of To the Moon and leading into the events of To the Moon 2, but otherwise a complete experience on its own. A Bird Story is planned for mid-2013.
A Bird Story will be a narrative-driven experience, much like To the Moon, but with little to no actual dialogue. The story is of a boy and a bird with a broken wing, described as a short, surreal experience taking place in the boy's, "memories, dreams, and imagination." Oh, Freebird Games, you are so wonderfully indie.

Here's the message from lead developer, design, the man behind Freebird Games, Kan Gao on expectations for A Bird Story:
"Heya folks. I know that for some who have played To the Moon, there might be certain expectations as to how the “next game” should be. And to be honest, I don’t really know how it’ll be in that regard — meeting certain quota or matching aspects of another game aren’t really things that I want to make them around.
However, what I can promise is that I’ll always be making what truly means something to me — and hopefully, to you too. I hope everyone could take them as they come, and enjoy them for their own merits.
Thanks for your kind support and spreading the word, folks; I wouldn’t be able to do this without you all. I’m grateful for it.
-Kan"
Hopefully with the announcement out of the way, Kan can get back to developing his game. We shouldn't expect too many updates until we get closer to mid-2013 and the game's release, but keep in mind as is the nature of indie games holding developers to any sort of hard schedule is often filled with disappointment. In the mean time, check out this teaser trailer of the game's title screen and music.
Expect A Bird Story in mid 2013 exclusively on PC. Sign up for the game's mail-list on Freebird Games' website, or check out the game's soundrack on their BandCamp page.
