God of War: Ascension is already adding competitive multiplayer for the first time in the franchise, so why not add a cooperative mode as well? Which is exactly what Santa Monica Studio decided, because today they announced the Trials of the Gods mode in their upcoming game for PlayStation 3. Join up with a friend for 2-person co-op and take on waves of mythical beasts. So, basically like single-player with a friend (jokes).
Trials of the Gods is being as a "bridge" between single-player and multiplayer according to Santa Monica Studio. It uses the same skill and combat system as multiplayer, even allowing players to accrue multiplayer experience points that work across modes.
The mode will feature five ways of increasing difficulty, featuring over fifteen different enemy types including Satyrs Gorgons and more. Basically a time trial, every creature killed adds time to the clock, so Trials of the Gods is less about survival and more about killing quickly. Reaching the end of the fifth waves will summon a colossal boss. Three maps will be available at launch with more to come (map packs? microtransactions?).
God of War: Ascension will be launching March 12 exclusively on PlayStation 3. While Trials of the Gods doesn't sound like a particularly robust experience, it's definitely a plus that Santa Monica Studio went above and beyond to add some cooperative content for players who may be intimidated by full on multiplayer. How long before God of War offers a full on Halo-style multiplayer experience?
