After being shut down by Hasbro, fan-made My Little Pony fighter returns with support from series producer
Fairly happy ending to this story
It's always a bummer when companies don't want fans going anywhere near their IPs. That was the case with Mane6's My Little Pony: Fighting, which was actually an EVO candidate too, up until Hasbro sent a cease and desist letter. Well, after being shut down for a time, MLP: Fighting is back in business with support from series producer Lauren Faust.
The bad news is that Hasbro still won't give permission to Mane6 for continuing the game, but with Faust's support, MLP: Fighting will live on -- just with a few changes. For one, the roster is being revamped with new characters in a new setting, though moves, mechanics, and the game's style remain the same.
Not to worry though, because Faust is on board to help them out with the whole new cast. The team posted her statement on their blog:
Hey folks! I’m so super psyched to be a part of this! I hope I can do my little part to help Mane6 finish up this game in a way that stays true to the spirit of the original—but in a way that can freely be shared! I hope you like what we come up with. -LF
Hasbro certainly is protective of their properties. Some companies seem okay with fan content as long as they're not making a profit off their creations. Mane6 had used MLP: Fighting to raise money for charity, but that was really it.

When I had heard that they stopped the making of it I was so sad but now this just made my day!
If you can't have specific ponies, what else works? MORE PONIES.
Non-specific ponies are another matter, they're just inspired by the world and its inhabitants, not something trademarked(?) by Hasbro.
i actually gone and tried this game and i mentioned once before i'm not really charmed by the online mlp fanbase for their out of place role playing and the flame wars they always have something to do with.
maybe this game has something? let's see where this will go.
Yeah, objectively the mane 6 will never end up in the game now. Hasbro has to protect its IP, so it can't just let people use them in a polished game (even a free one), and they can't acquire the game because it sends the wrong message to its main demographic.
It might have managed to be completed, the project and released into the wild with all the main characters before the C&D came, except the game was thrown into the spotlight because of that fighting game tournament.
