This is one rumor that really surprised the heck out of us. During an interview with Silicon Republic, SCE Senior Vice President Michael Denny was providing a list of upcoming titles for PlayStation 3 titles in 2013 -- not PlayStation 4. "The Last of Us, Beyond, GT6…" hold up, did he just say Gran Turismo 6? In what world would Sony release Gran Turismo 6 on the PlayStation 3 when they've got the PlayStation 4 coming out. Mind blown.
IGN followed up the story and contacted Sony to qualify the veracity of the rumor:
"In 2010, Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that Polyphony Digital had commenced development for Gran Turismo 6. We look forward to sharing further details on this title in the near future."
Well, I wasn't even aware that Polyphony had been working on Gran Turismo 6 since 2010, so this rumor is all sorts of rewarding. Three years doesn't seem quite long enough for Polyphony to turn around a full sequel to the franchise, however. I'd expect we'll hear more in a decade or so.
All joking aside, there's been a lot of talk about Gran Turismo 6 going around lately as a result of the PlayStation 4 announcement. Oddly, the car game revealed at the event was DriveClub and not a Gran Turismo title. It would be odd to have two next-gen racing titles that have similar focuses in the console's launch line-up, but if Gran Turismo 6 was coming to PS3 instead... it would be exciting to see the graphical difference between the two.
As Sony says, hopefully we'll get more information on Gran Turismo 6 soon.
