Rumor: EA and Microsoft strike next-gen exclusivity deal, announcement set for Durango reveal
This would explain why EA didn't appear at the PlayStation 4 Meeting
Electronic Arts was notably absent from Sony's big PlayStation 4 reveal last Wednesday, which many found odd considering so many other major publishers showed up to throw in their support. Well, recent rumors might explain why that is; anonymous sources are claiming that EA and Microsoft have struck an exclusivity deal of sorts.
The exact details of this supposed partnership are unknown, and we're mostly expecting timed exclusives on DLC or earlier releases for the Durango. Full exclusivity just seems a bit of a stretch, really, especially considering the staggering production values on AAA titles nowadays.
As for specific titles, rumors are pointing to Battlefield 4 and Respawn Entertainment's debut shooter, but until proven otherwise, that's all just speculation.
During his talk at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen explained just why the industry giant skipped out on Sony's PlayStation 4 Meeting. To that, Jorgensen stated:
"It was more about timing of our own slate as well as trying to maintain a good balance of power with all the parties out there and choosing when to unveil certain pieces of software."
In the meantime, Jorgenson promises plenty more to see at E3, then clarified that EA would still support the PlayStation 4 despite their last week:
"At the end of the day we are very excited about Sony's platform. We feel there's a huge opportunity there. The technical power on the platform is going to allow us to do a substantial amount of things that have never been done before.
"I have seen the new Battlefield, and it is just stunning. It is just amazing what the imagination of the game developers [at DICE] are allowed to do with that much power."
