When Sony introduced Chris Metzen onto the stage of their PlayStation 4 announcement event, the crowd took a deep breath. "What's Blizzard doing here?" they whispered to each other. Then the lights went dim, then they turned red, and everyone kind of rolled their eyes, because we knew what was coming next. Diablo III is officially coming to consoles this holiday season -- on the PlayStation 4 (and PlayStation 3).
Chris Metzen spoke at length about the optimization and tooling the team at Blizzard was going through. This of course, should be every potential Diablo III play on console happy, because while the PC version of Diablo III is certainly simple by industry action RPG standards, there's still a lot of buttons to press. It's going to take some quick reaction time and even better controls to make sure Diablo III works as well on console as it does on PC.
So Blizzard is bringing Diablo III to PlayStation 3 and 4, but it's worth nothing that they never referred to it as an exclusive console release. It's likely we can expect the title to also come out on the Xbox 360 and also Microsoft's next-gen Xbox down the line. Metzen mentioned that the game will be available to demo as soon as PAX East, which could mean a release within months on current-gen systems. Time will tell, but... if anything, it's good to see Blizzard back on consoles.
