It wouldn't be a Nintendo Direct event without a bit a teaser announcement at the end. Still, the reveal of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D likely surprised everyone except Reggie Fils-Aime. Described as a completely rebuilt version of the popular Wii adventure, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D details remain scant. Judging from the look of the screenshots below, we can likely hope for a release in 2013.
That said, judging from the screenshots, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D does look to have worse graphics than its Wii predecessor. The textures for Donkey Kong and his environment look awkwardly pixelated and blocky. Will the 3DS' 3D vision make up for the worse fidelity? Hard to tell, but I'm rather surprised at the drop in quality.
Still, Donkey Kong coming to the 3DS is no small matter and Donkey Kong Country Returns with high or low resolution textures doesn't change the fact that this is an excellent game. Barring the Mario Galaxy titles, Donkey Kong Country Returns might well be the best platforming game on the Wii. It never seemed to get the attention of Mario of even Epic Yarn though, so maybe on the 3DS the title will do better.
