Where, oh where, has The Last Guardian been for the past two years? No news became worse news when we head designer Fumito Ueda left Team Ico and would only be working on the project as a freelance contributor. Some of us have all but given up hope of the game ever being released. Thank goodness then that Ueda has gone out of his way to confirm The Last Guardian is still in development today.
Here's Fumito Ueda's exact words, along with some reasoning behind why the title has yet to receive a release date:
"While it’s been a long time coming, The Last Guardian remains under my creative supervision and is still in development by an incredibly talented team.
I should also mention that details regarding The Last Guardian's release is solely decided by Sony Computer Entertainment, not myself. Please keep an eye out for their official announcement."
This great news comes in three parts: 1, The Last Guardian is still in development; 2, Fumito Eeda, despite being a contractor, is still creative supervisor on the project; 3, release announcement coming soon. What a wonderful gift for Ueda to go out of his way to provide us. Why, it's almost as if this message is a carefully planned event to build hype for an upcoming event, but what event?
Oh, that's right, Sony might be announcing their next-gen PlayStation on February 20. Wouldn't that be the perfect place to announce the return of The Last Guardian as a console launch title? Well great, now I won't be able to think about anything else all day.
