So, if you want used Xbox games, Xbox 360 is at best.

I thought Sony made a patent for the used game category, or as they call it "second-hand" games. So if this is true, wouldn't Microsoft have to do something different with used games without violating that patent or something like that?
Sony patented tech to allow the console to write to a portion of the disc making it unusable in another console. In the past Sony have been a white knight of sorts though patenting ideas that they feel could be detrimental in the wrong hands.

Leaked documents surrounding Durango a lot of these stemming from screenshots of dev-kit licence agreements, state that Durango will use the disc drive as a means to install games where they will then be accessed. Now when you have a mandatory install on everything you can also adopt ideas like a mandatory activation code or if the system is always online just tie that disc to the players account Steam style.

The issue is that Sony's patents in the anti-used game space have been merely offline ways to do it so if Microsoft are doing it the way leaked documents suggest then they have circumvented patents.

I doubt the inability to play used games rumour is true, but if it is, I'll happily never buy the new Xbox.

Even if you ignore the WiiU(lol).
There is the 3DS which also sold at a loss in the beginning
Late answer I know but the 3DS wasn't sold at a loss in the beginning. They where making about $40-50 USD for every 3DS sold, it was when they slashed the price that they started losing money but then they came out with the XL (which wasn't sold at a loss) so Nintendo didn't really take a hit.

So I don't think the used games bit is true. Didn't this same dude say that ps4 blocks used games? And we all know that Yoshida dispelled that rumor rather promptly.
was that rumor squashed at the PS4 conference? i only caught the tail end of it. if so, that is super good news, as there's next to no chance MS will block used games if Sony isnt.

The best way it was explained to me was that the video game industry can't make money like the movie or music industry does. Once they put out the product its hard to get people to keep buying it like movies do with theater sales, then DVD
sales and rentals, then selling to HBO Cinemax Starz Epix, then to more local channels. That's why almost every game made now has DLC.
Right. There's only one way to access a particular game. You can't go to a theater and play it. You can't wait for it on premium cable channels or pay-per-view.

I'd say the only other media that could be closely compared is literature, but then the operating costs are significantly lower than videogames and nowadays there's digital formats and audiobooks.

Okay anyone who thinks the "Developers"will get ANY extra money because of this they are sorely mistaken. I've heard similar statements in the past, and didn't feel the need to point out the obvious. Does anyone think the guys we follow on twitter, the lead multiplayer designer for this game, or that, working 12 hour days is going to benefit from us not buying used games? Absolutely not, the upper echelons of the studios, publishers will definetly get an increase in yearly income, but that's about it. Why is the video game industry special in that they get to dictate or try to what happens with the product they have sold? Seriously have you ever heard of any other industry bitch and moan about how much used sales of their products are costing them money, because I can't think of anything besides gaming. Okay mini rant done. :-)

And don't forget it was the previous generation that forced companies to increase the price of games in order to make up for the money lost for each console sold. I don't see that being as harsh this time around as both companies seem a bit more conservative.
All I can do is look at the Vita in response to this comment. Pretty sure it's still being sold at a loss.
Every console at launch is.
Except nintendo

ignore the wiiu
