The Wii U's problems aren't that its games look bad -- its games look great -- it's that its games aren't out. Luckily, there's some coming up soon and one in specific that just got a new, lengthy trailer. Lego City Undercover maybe be exactly what nerds are looking for now that Grand Theft Auto 5 has been delayed. With all of that Lego charm and humor on top of those GTA open world, free-roam sensibilities, maybe Lego isn't just a kids' brand.
Dozens of kids' games over the past years have sold themselves to a wider crowd based on gameplay and personality, despite a simplistic nature. For instance, much like Retro City Rampage, Lego City Undercover is extremely referential to other works and that's something many nerds will respect. Add in a clever humor with many jokes that only adults will pick up on and it's hard to tell the game is geared toward younger audiences at all.
What sells me though is the open world gameplay. Gameplay is a language that has no target audience, and open world, free roam titles are few and far between. I see a city that's fully explorable and I can't help myself -- I have to explore it. What this Lego City Undercover trailer shows me is variety -- variety in environments, in gameplay, and more. That, perhaps more than anything, is what it takes to get me excited about a game.
Lego City Undercover is coming exclusively to the Wii U on March 18. Check out the trailer below and see if this kids' game speaks to you in the same way that is spoke to me. Also, look at those facial expressions. Better than LA Noire, in my honest opinion.
