Wargaming, the studio behind World of Tanks, World of Warplanes, and the upcoming World of Warships, has announced the acquistion of Day 1 Studios for $20 million. Its first task is the development of an unannounced console title, though neither a platform or release window was specified. The newest member of the family is also being rebranded as Wargaming West, since the main office is in Belarus.
Many people are no doubt familiar with Wargaming and any of its MMO games. This unannounced console game is a first for the company, but CEO Victor Kislyi sounds quite happy about the whole thing. He had the following to say on the matter:
The move into console game development is a huge step for Wargaming, as we begin to expand our presence into new platforms. We are looking forward to sharing the fruits of our labor soon.
Day 1 Studios most recently created F.E.A.R. 3, but also made the two MechAssault games for the original Xbox, Fracture for the PS3 and 360, and worked with Monolith for the PS3 and 360 ports of F.E.A.R. 1. If any studio could get Wargaming into the console scene, it's certainly Day 1.
Keep it tuned for future updates on what the new Wargaming West studio is working on. There are some job openings available on the Wargaming West website, so head on over to see if anything suits your skills.
