The news just goes from bad to worse for Funcom, as the company announced plans to close its Beijing office. Furthermore, the live teams for Anarchy Online, Age of Conan, and The Secret World are all being consolidated under one roof in the Raleigh, North Carolina, studio. Both the Raleigh and Montreal locations will also have staff reduced since Funcom's future plans call for smaller teams working on smaller online games.
What all does this mean for Funcom and the future of its remaining studios? Well, the layoffs in Montreal free up that location for work on tablet and mobile phone projects. The Dreamworld engine is still going to be worked on, so hopefully more improvements will be forthcoming. Funcom's Norwegian office is mostly marketing, administration, and operations, but the Lego Minifigures game is still in development there apparently.
A sad day for those affected by closures and layoffs at Funcom, and best of luck looking for new employment. Hopefully these are the last of the layoffs and restructuring by the company to keep things afloat for the future.
