While the biggest surprise, emphasis on biggest, of today's Wii U Nintendo Direct may have been a multiplayer Xenoblade, the other biggest surprise, emphasis on surprise is Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem. Yes, please do take a moment to say, "What?" Crossovers are all the rage in Japan right now, and since both franchises have new releases coming up (Fire Emblem: Awakening and Shin Megami Tensei IV) Nintendo decided to make something happen.
Pause for another, "What?" if you need it.
Yes, Atlus and Intelligent Systems are coming together to make what I assume will be an RPG of some type. Since the Shin Megami Tensei franchise are dungeon crawlers and Fire Emblem are all strategy title, it's a curious thing to think about what sort of gameplay will be born from this unholy pairing. On top of that, both games are thematically polar opposites. Can you imagine Marth taming demons and ultimately deciding whether humanity should have free-will? Doubling down on the, "What?" now.
Unfortunately, there was only a brief announcement during the Nintendo Direct event and details were rather scarce. Take a look at the short trailer to see if you can glean any hints about the title, or recognize any of either franchise's protagonists. Expect to hear more on the Wii U crossover as we approach E3. Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem... okay, sure. Bring it on.
